From Philomath to Phoenix...

Posted in Unspecified

I was inspired to finally do a post. The Super Bowl has just ended and the Giants have just pulled a serious upset. Now, I can't stand the Giants and could really care less for Eli, Strahan, and the rest, but I'm extremely happy for Kevin Boss, number 89 in your program.

I remember going to my first game here at Western Oregon. It was a bit of culture shock. There were about 1,000 people in the stands and most of them were from the other school. Being from Texas, I thought this was a pretty pathetic turnout. Hell, I've participated in practices with more spectators than that. Anyway...I was able to see this tall, skinny kid grab every ball that came near him and I was impressed. Yup, that kid was Kevin Boss. Later, I was to get to know him in several of my classes. Great ballplayer...good kid.

He comes from the town of Philomath. I can't even pronounce it correctly much less find it on the map. He played here at a D-2 school and was a 5th round pick. And now...he has a Super Bowl championship ring. He even caught a key pass that led to the Giants first touchdown. I don't think I've ever been happy for any other team's win (other than the Cowboys) before.

Now, I only rooted for the Giants because of Boss and the fact that they represented the NFC and the East division. I am not one of those bandwagon jumpers who roots for a team just because they're winning. I had one of those guys over for the game. I can't stand that sort of thing and am surprised I even let him in the door.

I had a few friends over and we had some good grub and a lot of trash-talking. Patriot-come-lately had gone and gotten a jersey and cap for the occasion to show his support for his team du jour. What a loser...or poser...or both as far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong...root for the other team if you want but don't act like you're their biggest and greatest fan...sheesh.

Anyway...we ate, we laughed, we cussed...and then we threw dumbshit out... It was a pretty good game and was actually more entertaining than the commercials. Although, I did like the Coke commercial with all the balloons and the Sobe Thriller one. Tom Petty sounded good for someone on loan from some assisted living facility... *sigh* Come on, draft...

Joe Montana was my PE coach in 5th grade.

Oh...

And I invented Post-Its !

Cam - 09:02 - Sun-3-Feb-2008

Yeah...good ol' Joe. I taught him how to throw a football, you know.

Oh...and I invented Liquid Paper.

texican - 09:07 - Sun-3-Feb-2008

My brother gave my daughter Erin the prototype card for Joe Montana years ago, he was a client of his. I lost it, can you believe that? I had it on the top of my closet and when I switched rooms with my boys I forgot about it. Who knows where it ended up, some kid probably thought it was just an everyday card.....

That's pretty cool Rene, I enjoyed your post. And it's about time too!! :D

lisalisabobisa - 09:14 - Sun-3-Feb-2008

Well...uh...

I invented... um... MONEY !

Cam - 09:21 - Sun-3-Feb-2008

Keep tryin' Cam...

Last Christmas, Moose got a card from my Dad, which included a couple of Troy Aikman and Jimmy Johnson trading cards. He was reading it and wondered why Grandpa had put business cards in it, too. I asked to look at them and, sure enough, they were business cards. Then I turned them over and saw that Jimmy and Troy had autographed them. Dad met them on a flight coming back from DC. He had been there for a conference and the other two were coming back from meeting the President after one of their Super Bowl wins. Pretty frackin' cool.

Tres COOLIO, Bud !

I hope Moose Man is keepin' those safe...

( And yes... I still LOATHE the Cowboys ! )

Cam - 09:52 - Sun-3-Feb-2008

LMAO...

I feel the same way about the 'Niners...and the Steelers...and the Packers...and the rest of the NFC East...

Moose treasures those cards and has them in a safe place. We're gonna take them to get matted and framed.

*faints*

Haaaahahaha...

Very funny...

;p

I'm not much of a football fan, but I even watched a little of the game, not just the commercials. I'm just glad the patriots didn't win. Any team with Randy Moss should loose. He was nothing but trouble when he was with the Minnesota Vikings!

Hey Cam...If you invented money....can I have some?

littleMissConfused - 05:43 - Mon-4-Feb-2008

i dont care. i couldnt root for the giants. ever.
not even if you played on that team.
:P
but it was a good game. i feel a little less bad about the butt whooping they gave us a few weeks ago.
a little.

so thats what happened to those autographs.
cool.

birdsnest - 06:11 - Mon-4-Feb-2008

Yeah...the Giants' win makes it a little easier to take our loss, except I think we lost it more than they won it. I think the Giants matched up better against the Pats than we would have. The Patriots would have torched our secondary.

It wasn't easy to root for NY. I almost broke out in hives...

texican - 05:15 - Mon-4-Feb-2008

Naturally being a Texan from Dallas my team, good or bad, is the Dallas Cowboys. Now I'm not a Giants fan per-say, especially not that Tiki Barber is gone...but the Giants are in our conference so I was rooting for them, and was thrilled by that last winning play.

Oh...and I was back up quarterback for Roger Stauback!

Rubicon - 03:10 - Tue-5-Feb-2008

Nice to know Roger was in such good hands...;)

texican - 03:21 - Tue-5-Feb-2008

Oh but of course Rene....and I was there for him when he went into the chicken business! Ha ha ha ha

Rubicon - 04:33 - Wed-6-Feb-2008

Haaahahaha...

texican - 07:44 - Wed-6-Feb-2008

We're not going to talk about that game. I knew it was going downhill when they didn't even try to kick that damned field goal. I started self medicating with my uncle Jim Beam right about then.

slayerbarbie - 12:27 - Fri-8-Feb-2008

Actually, I thought the game was over about halfway through the second quarter. The Pats got a turnover and a stop on two straight possessions. I was waiting for the dam to burst and it never did.

texican - 12:55 - Fri-8-Feb-2008

wow...i really don't like football much at all, but that is pretty pathetic...i think our high school gets around 1000...definitely that much at homecoming and the temple vs belton games...belton is our supposed rival...

i guess being from texas will do that to you...do you still say y'all? if not, i've lost all hope... ;)

karinsa - 09:30 - Mon-3-Mar-2008

Haahahahaha...of course I do. And...much to the consternation of the locals...I proudly wear my Longhorn cap as often as possible.

MY Epidemiology professor was from Texas and had gone to A&M. I walked into class (wearing the cap) on the first day of the term and the first thing out of her mouth was, "Oh no!" I thought she had gone to USC or something, but then I was able to hear her Texas twang...I could just guess that she was somehow associated with A&M.
